Building ukuleles and guitars is more than just a construction process for me. I consider it to be more like a father / child relationship. I suppose it is because I so deeply value the bond I share with my daughters. Each one of them is at a different stage of life, each requiring unique attention, care and guidance. When I begin the process of building an instrument, I determine the basic characteristics that it will have. But similar to children, at an early stage, it develops it’s own personality. As each ukulele or guitar slowly transforms from a slab of wood into an instrument with a voice of it’s own, I spend a great deal of time with each one. I can build an instrument in about 40 hours start to finish, but I choose not to. I much prefer to spend the time creating and nurturing each instrument’s personality and spirit and watching as the aging process slowly matures it’s acoustic voice. I suppose that it is for this reason that I am so attached to each and every instrument that I finish. Each one possessing a part of me and becoming a part of my family.
